Jennie -- Our Miracle Girl

An Irrepressible Westie

TOO SOON

These dogs we love, they come to us like bright shooting stars chasing down a warm summer night sky.   Unable to turn, we watch as the universe plays its sparkling surprise.  Then they are gone.  Our eyes gaze to the place that was.  The stars return to unblinking shine and all seems as before.  But, oh so much quieter now.  And we weep for the small miracles that depart too soon for our hearts to comprehend.

Jennie began our love for this marvelous breed.  She was born December 21, 1985 and came to our home appropriately on Valentine's Day 1986.   This sweet, funny and fascinating girl was a world class hunter, scientist and born leader.  She had great fun finding bugs in the grass, loved to rub her back on the low branches of the camellia and azalea bushes in the backyard, knew how to open doors and, fortunately for us, was a benevolent despot.

She was one part tomboy, two parts flirt and possessed an absolutely irrepressible personality.  She designated herself as the official family greeter royally kissing and welcoming everyone to our home with her sparkling eyes.   This little charmer loved to make up games and had a special and unique game she played with each member of the family.   Her comical antics  never ceased to make us laugh.

When Jennie was 7 months old, Sam entered our family and she seemed to love her new role as big sister treating Sam as her favorite toy.  She protectively watched Sam as he slept and had a ready and willing playmate who obeyed her every word -- well, some of the time, anyway.

Another role Jennie loved was that of cookie monster.  Jennie was well-known to her fellow Westie friends as "Keeper of the Royal Cookies" educating us all on the joys and medicinal properties only a good cookie can bring.

But above all else, Jennie was definitely Daddy's girl, lighting up with joy as soon as she saw her Dad.  Her favorite activity was helping him mow the grass -- green feet was a small price to pay to be with her Dad.  Jennie and her Dad had a special bond from the beginning and he nicknamed her "Puck" inspired by her impish sense of humor.

When Jennie was 8 years old, she was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease.  Three years later she was diagnosed with Westie Lung Disease and the following year she became Diabetic.  Due to two internal abscesses of unknown origin, the Cushing's Disease developed into Diabetes.  Jennie, at the age of 12 years old, had abdominal surgery at UC Davis Veterinary Hospital to remove the abscesses.  The surgery was performed on Good Friday 1998 and by Easter Sunday Jennie was well on her way to a full recovery.  She was not expected to survive the surgery but this plucky girl defied all the odds and became our Easter Miracle.  After 23 days in the hospital and countless prayers by so many wonderful people all over the world, a happy, active Jennie returned to our home.

With the addition of our youngest Westies, first Rocky and then Kalie, to our family Jennie gained the title of Dowager Dog as she helped us welcome and love these wonderful pups.   Her patience in teaching them the ways of our world was extraordinary and a joy to watch.   She enjoyed playing and exploring with the pups and always loved a good round of Westie Crazy.

However, she was quick to remind these youngsters that she was still the Boss when they made the unforgivable mistakes of disturbing her beauty sleep or walking in front of her...such was life with Jennie.

Jennie's zest for life was never overshadowed by her many medical conditions.  She handled life's many challenges with grace and dignity.  Jennie will always be remembered for her boundless love, courage and enthusiasm.

Jennie will forever be in our hearts.
