On June 14, 1998 we met
our 10 week old Kalie (pronounced KAY-lee) in the Seattle airport brought
to us by her breeder, Carol Medrzycki of Starrcrest
Kennels.
It was love at first sight! She was the most beautiful and adorable
puppy we had ever seen. We believe this darling girl was destined
to be part of our family...she was born the same day our beloved Sam went
to Rainbow Bridge, April 7, 1998.
The flight home to San Francisco was a breeze as Kalie handled the plane like a little trouper sleeping in her Sherpa bag safely under our seats. Homecoming was an exciting event as Rocky and Jennie royally welcomed their new baby sister. Kalie immediately figured out Rocky was the Playmate and Jennie was the Head of the Household. From the beginning, Kalie would take a flying leap and land on Rocky to play with him! We knew she would be able to hold her own with Rocky. And Kalie, in their first 24 hours together, taught Rocky how to dig in the backyard!! It was immediately apparent they were going to be an awesome pair. Their specialty has become digging tunnels in the middle of the yard. After a good day's dig, they stretch out in the grass frog-dog style to admire their handiwork. Instinctively, Kalie always treated Jennie much differently. We loved watching Kalie follow behind Jennie imitating her! She learned so much from Jennie. We think Kalie was a very lucky little girl to have such an exceptional teacher. And she did listen when Jennie spoke. Despite some occasional correctional growls from Jennie, the girls had fun playing together everyday. Kalie has always been such a spunky girl. When she was little she saw absolutely no reason why she couldn't do everything the big kids did. Kalie loved all of Rocky's big boy toys...the bigger the toy, the better. She is a real character with an exuberant non-stop personality full of "Westie-tude". Kalie was a dream baby sleeping straight through the night and waking up happy and full of Westie kisses. And this determined girl was completely potty-trained and sleeping with us by the ripe old age of 3 months! When she was 5 months old, Kalie attended puppy kindergarten and, though not a model student (!), she learned her commands and graduated. A few months later Kalie completed an Agility class which she enjoyed much more. We also had a lot of fun working with Kalie in Agility and were amazed by all of her accomplishments. She was a natural and her exceptional climbing skills and fearlessness really shined in this class. Our baby girl is our first Westie to howl. When the doorbell rings, Kalie puts her little nose in the air, closes her eyes and out of her mouth comes the sweetest-sounding ARRR-ROOOOO to the sheer delight of us and whomever is at the door. It never ceases to make us smile. She is also our first Westie to sit on the backs of the sofas... perfectly perched and quite pleased to be above it all. Kalie's days are full of play and exploration. She is so bright and intelligent that we can just see the "wheels turning". And we are usually one step behind this bundle of energy. She is quite a mischievous little thief and, after all these years, her Dad is finally learning to close his closet door. She has become "Mommy's Little Helper" ready to lend me her assistance with every project...her favorites are making the bed, giving Rocky a bath and, of course, gardening. We adore our inquisitive little girl and look forward to a lifetime of love, laughter and wonderful adventures we will share with our incredible Kalie. |
