What you see is what you get and this Angelic looking boy was just exactly that. We called Sam our Precious Angel. We always knew we were in the presence of greatness. Sam joined our family during the summer of 1986. Jennie was then 7 months old. He and Jennie became instant pals. Jennie considered Sam her pet and Sam devotedly followed and eagerly learned the ways of the world from his creative and adventuresome big sister. We were all truly blessed to be owned by this extraordinary and loving fellow. Our "Bubby" decided he would be our lap dog and never missed an opportunity to snuggle and cuddle. This always happy boy was such a gentle and loving soul. He was truly a Gift from Heaven. And our beautiful boy was definitely a Ladies' Man. His most endearing habit was showering his Mommy with a zillion sweet good-night kisses every night before he settled down to sleep. It was as though he lavished an abundance of kisses to last me a lifetime. But Sam had his macho side as well. He took his guarding duties very seriously, loudly voicing righteous indignation when any roaming cats dared to enter his backyard. He kept the backyard so safe for all of us. Our brave boy's hunting specialty was to inform the family of any dead bees and he even had a special Dead Bee Bark to announce his find. Sam will always be remembered by those who knew him for his love of a good tummy rub. It was rare indeed when Sam could not persuade someone to rub his tummy for hours at a time...usually his Grandma who adored him. Our boy was a Master of the Westie Stare and we laugh at all the ways he used this trait to his advantage, most often during a rousing round of Westie Crazy in an attempt to cause Jennie a little aggravation. However, the memory that we will forever cherish in our minds is watching our little Sam sitting in front of the Christmas Tree each year full of anticipation and great delight looking at the ornaments and lights...and wagging his tail. He truly believed in Santa Claus and so did we. Sam was diagnosed with diabetes in October, 1996. By the following summer he had become blind from diabetic cataracts. The cataracts were successfully removed in July 1997 and, happily, Sam had perfect vision for the remainder of his life which included one more joyous Christmas. Then suddenly in the Spring of 1998 our lives were shattered as cancer swiftly and sadly took our sweet boy to Rainbow Bridge. We know he was greeted at the Bridge by his friends who went before him. It is quietly comforting to know Sam and his friends watch over us and will patiently wait for us to join them. We will forever love and deeply miss our gentle and sweet Sam. He brought pure joy into our lives.
